NEW COAL AWARD HONORS THE LATE
DR. HENRY H. STORCH

Friends of the late Dr. H. R. Storch have established a memorial award to be
administered by the Division of Fuel Chemistry, American Chemical Society. The
Henry H. Storch Award wilI be given annually to the citizen of the United States
who has contributed most to fundamental or engineering research on the chemistry
and utilization of coal or related materials in the preceding five years. The Award,
consisting of a plaque and an honorarium of $100, will be presented at the Fall
National Meeting of the American Chemical Society.

Dr. Henry H. Storch (1894-1961) was an outstanding physical chemist as well
as an extraordinarily effective research director. His contributions to the chemistry
and utilization of coal included fundamental research on the structure and reactions
of coal and catalysis of the water-gas shift, the Fischer-Tsopsch synthesis, the
0x0-reaction, and coal hydrogenation; as well as engineering studies of the Fischer-
Tropsch synthesis and the hydrogenation and gasification of coal. He had an
intuitive appreciation of engineering problems and their solutions. Many of his
contributions were made as a director of research at the Bureau of Mines from
1928-1953. A biographical sketch of Dr. Storch has been presented in Fuel, 41, 295

Dr. Storch was an active member of the Pittsburgh Section, and he received
the Pittsburgh Award in 1948. The Pittsburgh Section contributed to the Storch
Award.
