Elia Merzari will be awarded the ANS Young Member Excellence Award at the American Nuclear Society (ANS) Winter Meeting in San Diego in November 2012.

The Young Member Excellence Award recognizes a young member who has demonstrated overall excellence in a variety of areas. The award is granted to an individual who is a member of the ANS Young Members Group (YMG), is involved with ANS at the national level, actively advances the goals of the ANS YMG, displays outstanding non-technical skills as well as technical or managerial ability, is recognized by others in their field, demonstrates high quality and safety standards, and positively represents nuclear science and technology to the general population.

Dr. Merzari has demonstrated excellence as a researcher in the areas of nuclear reactor thermal hydraulics and computational fluid dynamics. He has made important contributions to the understanding of turbulent fluid flows in the complex geometries of nuclear reactors. His work demonstrating the applicability of advanced computational fluid dynamics methods to the analysis of a variety of advanced reactor fuel assembly designs is internationally recognized. In fact, he was the organizer of a session focused on turbulent flow in tight lattice assemblies at the 2011 NURETH 14 topical meeting in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Dr. Merzari completed his doctoral degree in 2008. In his short career, Dr. Merzari has published fourteen articles on these topics in refereed journals and submitted scholarly articles to nearly 30 conferences. In 2010 he was awarded the American Nuclear Society Thermal Hydraulic Division Best Paper Award. In addition to his excellent technical contributions to the field, Dr. Merzari is an exemplary volunteer supporting the mission of the American Nuclear Society.
