Argonne Hosts G8 Nuclear Safety and Security Group

G8 meeting

Delegations from the European Union, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, and the United States participated in the G8 Nuclear Safety and Security Group Meeting at Argonne on October 17-18, 2012.

On October 17-18, Argonne National Laboratory hosted a G8 Nuclear Safety and Security Group (NSSG) meeting to discuss nuclear safety culture, new domestic nuclear construction projects, and other topics that could impact nuclear energy safety and security. This was the NSSG’s third meeting of 2012.

Delegations of the European Union (EU), Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, and the United States participated in the meeting.  The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) also attended. The Institute for Nuclear Power Operations (INPO) was invited to present during the session on nuclear safety culture.  A representative from Shaw Group, Inc. provided an update on new nuclear construction projects within the United States.

Under the chairmanship of the United States State Department, the NSSG provides technically informed strategic policy advice on issues that could impact safety and security in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. The NSSG is committed to achieving the highest levels of safety and a culture of continuous improvement to nuclear safety and security. The NSSG, in cooperation with the IAEA and other relevant international organizations, is promoting strong and competent national nuclear safety and security frameworks and cultures, by addressing both existing and emerging challenges and establishing partnership relations in these issues.

The meeting was hosted by Dr. Ron Faibish of the Nuclear Engineering Division.
