Job Description
  Basic Purpose
  Provides scientific leadership and research program direction, strategic planning, and resource management for effective operations and future development of APS synchrotron radiation research capabilities. Directs the development of beamline instrumentation, x-ray research applications, and coordinates design and related activities with other APS Divisions and APS Users. This position provides scientific management of all APS experimental x-ray science research, development, and construction activities. Directs the preparation of divisional research budgets and new initiatives for APS x-ray science facilities. Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  Comprehensive
Knowledge of instrumentation and applications for synchrotron radiation, x-ray science, and materials science research. Knowledge of DOE basic research programs, policies and procedures. Skill in developing creative solutions to complex scientific problems, applying scientific and managerial judgment, and creating effective working relationships with senior scientific and management staff. Skill in written and oral communication. Ability in motivating people, and organizing, scheduling, and integrating diverse technical activities. This position requires an outstanding international reputation in x-ray science.

This level of knowledge and skill is achieved and demonstrated through the attainment of a PhD in Physics, or equivalent, plus 10 or more years of experience in science administration.
