Job Description
  Basic Purpose
  As part of a scientific team, the incumbent will participate in ongoing development, commissioning, maintenance, and operation of the GM/CA at the APS Structural Biology User Facility. Particular responsibilities include characterization and diagnosis of X-ray optical equipment; and characterization of beam properties with an emphasis on automation and improved spatial and temporal beam stability. The incumbent will be responsible for writing and maintaining documentation and protocols describing beamline components and their use. Additional responsibilities include providing user support and training, and participating in beamline or methodology related research and development projects.
  Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Knowledge of synchrotron radiation, x-ray optics, detectors and precision instrumentation. Skill in synchrotron radiation applications such crystallography, small angle x-ray scattering or x-ray spectroscopy. Considerable oral and written communication skills and the ability to work productively with a variety of experts from various technical fields.
Ability to integrate and analyze information from multiple diverse sources, to identify issues, to develop solutions and to communicate work direction and strategies. Demonstrated expertise in some of the following areas: electronics, mechanical engineering, automation, technical writing, equipment testing, and mechanical aptitude.
The level of scientific knowledge and sophistication required is normally associated with a Ph.D. in applied physics, materials science, or related disciplines.
  Minimum Education/Experience Requirements
Bachelor's Degree and 8+ years work experience, or Master's Degree and 5+ years work experience, or Doctorate and 4+ years or their equivalents. The level at which an applicant will be hired will be dependent upon their qualifications and experience.
