Job Description
  Basic Purpose
  Responsible for providing technical support on beamlines operated by the Magnetic Materials Group at the Advanced Photon Source. Primary responsibility is to help users conducting experiments on 6-ID and assisting in the construction of the new beamline at 29-ID. Duties include overseeing the safety approval process and the safe conduct of experiments, providing user orientation, assisting users in setting up their equipment, and overseeing the shipment of user equipment to and from the APS. This position is also responsible for completing periodic logs of the beamline status, assisting scientific staff with the design and construction beamline components, providing general maintenance of beamline equipment, and maintaining an appropriate stock of beamline consumables.
   
  Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  Considerable
Skill in the operation of specialized laboratory apparatus related to x-ray scattering and x-ray optics, ultra high vacuum, x-ray detectors, and associated electronics.
  Good
Knowledge and hands on experience with synchrotron beamline equipment is useful. Knowledge of cryogenic systems, superconducting magnets, and various types of electrical equipment is highly desirable. Communication skills for transmitting information and ideas to experimental scientists and support service personnel. Organizational skills for maintaining and servicing various beamline sub-systems. General knowledge of high vacuum and machine shop practices,. Basic computer skills, including familiarity with Autocad or similar design programs.
  Minimum Education/Experience Requirements
Bachelor's Degree and 0 years work experience, or Master's Degree and 0 years work experience or their equivalents
