Job Description
  Basic Purpose
This position involves research using x-ray micro-diffraction at the APS beam line 34ID E. This beam line provides a sub-micron diameter white/monochromatic x-ray beam suitable for many types of spatially resolved x-ray diffraction. It is especially suitable for measuring defects in real materials and poly-phase samples. The applicant will be responsible for planning synchrotron radiation research, and for designing, constructing, and operating associated equipment in support of x-ray micro-beam diffraction. Develop scientific applications and advanced instrumentation for x-ray micro-beam diffraction and spatially resolved diffraction microscopy, including development and implementation of advanced data analysis algorithms. Responsible for reporting relevant results in an appropriate form. Within 5 years of initial appointment, must develop all or part of R&D program of interest to goals of the Division.
  Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Skill in experimental physics (or associated field such as materials, metallurgy, or crystallography to develop scientific applications and advanced instrumentation for x-ray micro-beam diffraction; skill in understanding abstract concepts and synthesizing results within the current experimental and theoretical framework; skill in advanced data analysis algorithms and methods; skill in written and oral communications.
Knowledge of x-ray diffraction methods, x-ray physics and applications; good knowledge of synchrotron radiation, x-ray optics, detectors, and precision instrumentation.
This level of scientific knowledge and sophistication must have a required PhD in materials science, applied physics, physics, metallurgy, chemistry/crystallography with strong x-ray skills and associated fields.
  Minimum Education/Experience Requirements
Bachelor's Degree and 5+ years work experience, or Master's Degree and 3+ years work experience, or Doctorate and 0 years or their equivalents
