Basic Purpose |
| |
Responsible for enabling and performing research in time-resolved x-ray science primarily related to physical sciences at the BioCARS facility, Sector 14. The Sector 14 facility is the premier synchrotron-based beamline for time-resolved x-ray diffraction and scattering. Sector 14 is multidisciplinary and supports R&D and users in structural biology (roughly 65%) and physical sciences (roughly 35%). Responsible for the laser pump/x-ray probe instrumentation. Develops scientific applications and advanced instrumentation for x-ray time-resolved research in chemical and physical sciences, and contributes to such research in biological sciences. Responsible for reporting relevant results in an appropriate form. Within 5 years of initial appointment, should develop an R&D program of interest to goals of the Division |

Knowledge, Skills and Experience |
| |
Considerable Knowledge and experience in ultrafast femtosecond and picosecond laser systems and optics. Experimental skills to develop scientific applications and advanced instrumentation for ultrafast time-resolved x-ray scattering and spectroscopy; skill in understanding abstract concepts and synthesizing results within the current experimental and theoretical framework; skill in advanced data analysis algorithms and methods; skill in written and oral communications. |

Good Knowledge of optics, detectors, electronics, vacuum systems, synchrotron radiation, x-ray optics, and precision instrumentation. |

Other This level of scientific knowledge and sophistication required is normally associated with a Ph.D. in physics, materials science, physical chemistry or related disciplines. |
