Job Description
  Basic Purpose
  This position involves optical beamline design and optics computation in support of a broad range of the APS optics group R&D activities, including but not limited to focusing mirrors, multilayer optics and other types of novel focusing optics. The scientist will play a major role in designing and evaluating the performance of APS-fabricated optics through physical optics modeling and simulation, ray tracing, and data analysis and processing. This may be done using a combination of existing codes, and development of new computer codes. The work also includes contribution to the overall efforts of the optics group to support APS beamlines and users. Within 5 years of initial appointment, must develop all or part of R&D program of interest to goals of the Division.
   
  Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  Considerable
Knowledge of physical optics and scientific computing. Experience with wave optics simulation and ray tracing codes. Excellent programming skills (for example, in Matlab, IDL, Python, C++, or Fortran). Ability to work well in a diverse team environment.
  Good
Experience in optical system design. Communications skills including preparing technical papers to the professional community, and oral presentation skills. are required. Ability to drive individual projects to the success and the desire to work in a challenging professional environment.
  Other
Experience in x-ray optics and synchrotron radiation beamlines design is a plus.
  Minimum Education/Experience Requirements
Bachelor's Degree and 5+ years work experience, or Master's Degree and 3+ years work experience, or Doctorate and 0 years or their equivalents
