Job Description
  Basic Purpose
  Develops and executes mechanical designs for synchrotron radiation beamlines and experimental apparatus for the Advanced Photon Source. Independently defines conceptual principles as well as performs engineering analysis and detailed design. Leads other engineers and consults with scientists to develop novel conceptual design, and oversees execution from concept to final commissioning. Supervises procurement and manufacturing processes and conducts performance testing. Develops and implements R&D programs for synchrotron instrumentation design, including high-precision opto-mechanical components. This type of work is usually carried out in collaboration with other members of the group, division, other APS divisions, and the facility users.
  Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Comprehensive knowledge of mechanical design as applied to synchrotron radiation beamline instrumentation. Comprehensive knowledge of high-precision opto-mechanical positioning system design principles and common practices. Comprehensive knowledge of high-precision electronic motion control principles and common systems. Comprehensive knowledge and experience with 2D and 3D CAD systems.
Considerable knowledge of mechanical design and materials properties. Considerable knowledge of mechanical fabrication processes. Considerable knowledge of system design with high-precision optical and mechanical components and common electronic motion control systems. Considerable experience with FEA software, as applied to mechanical design. Considerable ability to provide technical leadership in team design environment subject to a stringent design review process, and to manage a full development process from conceptual design to acceptance testing. Considerable ability to independently perform R&D, to innovate, and to find state-of-the-art solutions to one-of-a-kind problems. Considerable written and verbal communication skills.
Mechanical engineering experience for synchrotron radiation instrumentation is a plus. Some knowledge and experience with synchrotron radiation X-Ray experimental techniques and synchrotron radiation beamline operations is a plus. Significant hands-on experience in developing precision positioning systems, including state-of-the-art piezo-based positioning, interferometric techniques, and related controls is required for some positions. This position description documents the requirements for an RD5 level position. Applicants will be considered for RD4 and RD3 positions if knowledge and experience do not support an RD5 level position. Argonne National Laboratory is currently seeking to fill three Principal Mechanical Engineer positions. You need to apply only once as all applicants will be considered for one of the three openings.
  Minimum Education/Experience Requirements
Bachelor's Degree and 15+ years work experience, or Master's Degree and 12+ years work experience, or Doctorate and 10+ years or their equivalents
