Basic Purpose |
| |
Designs, develops and conducts research programs related to structural studies of materials using the X-ray scattering techniques powder diffraction and pair-distribution-function (PDF) analysis, and/or related methods such as anomalous scattering and single crystal Bragg and diffuse scattering. Performs collaborative research with internal and external research scientists. Supports user experiments, principally at 11-ID-B (PDF) and 11-BM (high resolution powder diffraction), but also at other beamlines in the Structural Sciences group as needed. Initiates research activities in the areas of materials for energy generation, storage, conversion, and sustainability. Recruits new research groups to utilize the beamlines in the Structural Sciences group. |

Knowledge, Skills and Experience |
| |
Considerable Ability to work well in a team environment. Experience with designing and conducting crystallographic experiments with particular focus on in-situ measurements. Knowledge of diffraction techniques, including pair distribution function (PDF) analysis and powder diffraction. Knowledge of diffraction theory, crystallography, and approaches to advanced analysis including structural refinement and modeling. Skill in oral and written communication of scientific results and experimental plans. Knowledge of x-ray instrumentation, control hardware and software, including experience with the operation and commissioning of synchrotron beamlines and experiments. |

Good Ability to use and develop instrumentation and computer software related to the control of sample environments and data acquisition for beamline experiments.

Minimum Education/Experience Requirements Bachelor's Degree and 5+ years work experience, or Master's Degree and 3+ years work experience, or Doctorate and 0 years or their equivalents |
