Job Description
  Basic Purpose
  Conceives, designs, and oversees the fabrication of mechanical systems primarily in support of advanced nuclear energy systems research and development. These systems include advanced reactor and fuel cycle system and component technologies as well as facilities and equipment for performing engineering research. With only general direction, independently evaluates, selects, and applies standard scientific/engineering techniques, processes, and criteria; uses judgment in making major equipment adaptations and modifications. Works under the direction of a section manager or project manager. Exercises independent judgment and defines project objectives and scientific/technical approach. Tasks may also include more general mechanical support of scientific instruments and equipment for other ANL programmatic divisions as necessary.
   
  Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  Considerable
Knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, machine/mechanism design, properties of materials, heat transfer, fluid dynamics, basic structural design, fabrication techniques. High degree of creativity. Skill in applying this knowledge to the design of research and facility equipment is essential. Skill in the use of 3D solid modeling CAD software (Inventor, Solidworks, Pro-E, etc.) Ability to perform engineering analysis for structural, thermal, and/or hydraulic using commercial finite elements analysis (FEA) tools as well as analytic (hand) methods as approproiate. Ability to identify, specify, and select commercial components. Ability to plan, schedule and conduct detailed phases of work for part for part of a major project, including appropriate delegation of work to designers and the ability to see mechanical or electromechanical equipment from concept through testing. Oral and written communication skills. Ability to document designs and analysis and contribute material to presentations. Ability to prepare component specifications.

Familiarity with ASME pressure vessel code and/or ANSI B31.1/B31.3 Power and processing piping codes is desirable, but not required. Experience with Inventor and ANSYS is desirable, but not required.   Minimum Education/Experience Requirements
Bachelor's Degree and 5+ years work experience, or Master's Degree and 3+ years work experience, or Doctorate and 0 years or their equivalents
