Job Description
  Basic Purpose
  Responsible for developing and conducting independent research in advanced materials characterization at the Advanced Photon Source, particularly at the 1-ID beamline using high-energy diffraction microscopy (HEDM). Performs collaborative research with internal and external scientists, including seeking, planning and executing beamline experiments. Develops novel concepts and algorithms for HEDM data collection, reduction and analysis, including use of clusters and other high-performance computing resources. Reports relevant results in an appropriate form, with an emphasis on scientific journals.
  Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Knowledge of crystallography and one or more of the following techniques: x-ray diffraction, scattering and imaging. Skill in advanced data analysis algorithms and methods. Skill in written and oral communications.
Knowledge of x-ray physics and optics, synchrotron radiation and detectors. Software skills for high level programming (Matlab, Python, etc) and data visualization are desirable.
This level of scientific knowledge and sophistication required is normally associated with a Ph.D. in applied physics, materials science, or related disciplines.
