Job Description
  Basic Purpose
The proposed research will produce highly scalable implementations of multi-level multi-start optimization methods applicable to a wide range of problems where distinct, local minimizers are desired. Frameworks for both first-order and zero-order methods will be developed. Our focus is on asynchronous methods that require minimal global communication, and which are resilient to faults on multiple levels. Implementations will be included in the open-source Toolkit for Advanced Optimization (TAO). Motivating application problems in the area of particle accelerator design will be provided by the ComPASS project. Scalability studies will be run on the largest supercomputers in the US.
  Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Considerable knowledge in numerical analysis, optimization, or parallel scientific computing. Considerable expertise in one of C/C++/Fortran.
Good collaborative skills, including the ability to work well with other divisions, laboratories, and universities. Good communication skills.
Some experience with the development of nonlinear optimization and stochastic sampling techniques. Some experience in hybrid (e.g., MPI+OpenMP) parallel programming. Some exposure to compiling and running large scientific codes is desirable. Some experience in interdisciplinary collaborative research is desirable.
Candidates should have a Ph.D. in applied mathematics, computer science or a related discipline.
  Minimum Education/Experience Requirements
