Spinoff of award-winning technology facilitated by lab efforts
Science and Engineering Associates
Santa Fe, NM
Science and Engineering Associates (SEA), a small business, developed an innovative groundwater monitoring system, the SEA Membrane Instrumentation and Sampling Technique (SEAMISTTM).
Under Argonne's Office of Waste Management Programs, a project was developed to demonstrate the system at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The successful demonstration led to the delivery of two systems to DOE's Hanford Site for use in their soil gas monitoring program and for implementation at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in New Mexico to map brine infiltration and measure flow rates.
In 1993, the SEAMIST borehole instrumentation technology was sold to Eastman Cherrington Environmental. SEA will continue to support Eastman Cherrington as it develops its SEAMIST manufacturing and field application capabilities.
The SEAMIST technology won an R&D 100 Award in 1994.
Argonne's Office of Waste Management Programs is supported by DOE's Office of Environmental Management, Office of Technology Development.
