High-Performance Tailored Materials for Levitation Permanent Magnet Technologies
Making materials to help advance flywheel energy storage
Superconductive Components, Inc.
Nd1+xBa2-xCu3O7 (NdBCO) is a powerful new material with applications for levitation devices and permanent trapped-field magnets. This high-temperature superconducting material demonstrates superior magnetic flux trapping ability, surpassing all known competing materials in laboratory tests. Superconductive Components and Argonne have agreed upon a research partnership that will investigate the origin of NDBCO's superior flux trapping, extend its performance beyond current levels, and find ways to mass-produce it. The CRADA links the advanced basic science facilities and applications technologies of Argonne with the manufacturing facilities of Supercdonductive Components to develop new high-performance materials that will drive substantial advances in flywheel energy storage, permanent magnet, and related technologies. The CRADA addresses DOE's mission to achieve energy efficiency through the flywheel energy storage application of levitation materials.
Argonne's portion of this cooperative R&D is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Science, Laboratory Technology Research Program.
